Liv Chase has been my best friend for most of my life.

Most people who meet her think she’s quiet. Maybe a little withdrawn. Liv keeps to herself more than most people. She notices things others miss and carries them around in that quiet way of hers like they’re stones in her pockets.

Liv was raised by Daniel and Rebecca Chase. They’re surgeons. Daniel works trauma, Rebecca operates on hearts. Most people know them as the couple who adopted a quiet little girl and gave her a good life.

That part is true.

What most people don’t know is that the Chases carried secrets of their own.

Liv inherited their last name, but not their blood. Whatever answers exist about where she really comes from were buried long before either of us understood why.

For most of her life she tried very hard to live like a normal person. Quiet house. Quiet hobbies. Quiet future.

She used to run an online knitting shop called Snug as a Bug. Blankets, scarves, sweaters. Knitting relaxed her. Cooking did too. Liv always liked making things that took time and patience, things that ended with someone being warm or fed.

Those were simpler days.

She still drives the same dark green Jeep Wrangler though.

One thing most people notice pretty quickly is the way she talks.

Liv has a habit of quoting 80s movies like they’re ancient wisdom and weaving the lines into everyday conversation. Half the time you don’t even realize she’s doing it until you hear the line later and suddenly understand what she meant.

I speak her language.

It’s one of the few things that consistently pulls her out of that quiet shell.

The other thing about Liv is that she isn’t afraid of strange things.

Or strangers.

Most people hesitate when something doesn’t make sense. Liv leans closer. She’s always been like that, curious instead of cautious, open where other people would close ranks.

In hindsight, that personality trait explains a lot.
