If you're reading this file, you should know two things about Connor Cruz right away.

First, he's my older brother.

Second, he's the kind of person who runs toward danger when everyone else is running the other way.

Connor is twenty-eight years old and worked as a firefighter for the New Albany Fire Department. He'd been doing it long enough that the people at his station trusted him with their lives, which says a lot if you know firefighters.

He also has a degree in Fire, Arson, and Explosion Investigation, which he somehow managed to earn during the two years it took him to recover from an explosion that very nearly killed him.

I'm not exaggerating.

During his first year on the job, a warehouse explosion collapsed a cinder-block wall on top of him while he was pulling people out of the building. Connor saved three lives that day.

He almost lost his own.

The injuries were bad enough that the doctors weren't sure he would ever return to active duty. Broken bones, surgeries, months of recovery, physical therapy — the kind of thing that would convince most people to find a safer career.

Connor isn't most people.

Two years later he walked back into the fire station and went right back to work.
